Traditional architecture
In Prespa one can see different types of houses. The characteristics of the houses have many similarities with the traditional architecture of northern Greece and the wider Balkan area. Examples of the architectural tradition of Prespa can be seen in the settlements of Agios Germanos and Psarades, which have both been declared traditional villages. The local architecture of Prespa can be seen in houses built mainly in the early 20th century with stone, wood, earth and reeds: materials that people could easily find in their surrounding environment. Simple in form they fit the needs and capabilities of the inhabitants. Houses with large balconies on the first floor (loggias), houses with cottages, houses with large inner courtyards are the main architectural types found in the area.Read about the traditional water mill of Agios Germanos, an impressive pre-industrial monument that has been exemplarily restored and see two 3D illustrations of traditional houses.
